Our beachfront accommodation at Tauranga Bay is the perfect stopover between Abel Tasman National Park near Nelson and the Franz Josef and Fox Glaciers on the West Coast - just 3.5 to 4 hours drive in either direction.
Only 12 km from the main West Coast route, State Highway 6, we’re right beside the section known as The Great Coast Road - celebrated as one of the most scenic coastal drives in the world.
A truly unique beachfront setting
Set on a quiet peninsula at the end of the road and perched just 20 metres above the Tasman Sea, our property enjoys an unrivalled position on the edge of a beautiful horseshoe bay.
To the northwest, you’ll look out over Tauranga Bay’s popular surf break and the small cluster of islands known as Wall Island. Directly below, the shoreline’s large boulders and rock pools invite you to explore or take a refreshing dip at low tide.
The fine sandy beach curves gently around the bay, leading to the Seal Colony carpark - starting point for the short walk to the Seal Colony viewing platform. From there, the Cape Foulwind Lighthouse walkway continues along this spectacular stretch of coastline, offering stunning views of the dramatic Steeples rock formations offshore.
To the southwest
Behind us lies 9 Mile Beach (also known as Okari Beach) - a stunning stretch of golden sand that runs for miles until it meets the Okari River and lagoon. This expansive beach is a favourite for walking, exploring the rocky headlands, and surfing.
From here, the wild West Coast unfolds in all its beauty - rugged cliffs, dramatic rock formations, and dense native forest stretching endlessly southward. On a clear day, with a sharp eye, you might even glimpse the snowy peaks of Aoraki / Mount Cook shimmering on the horizon.
