Location
Tauranga Bay, Māori for ‘sheltered anchorage’, is located at Cape Foulwind - 16kms south of Westport and 57kms north of Punakaiki, on the West Coast of the South Island.
Our beachfront accommodation is in the ideal location for that deserved stopover between Abel Tasman National Park near Nelson, and the Franz & Fox Glaciers on the West Coast - approx. 3.5 to 4 hours drive time either way. Our accommodation in Tauranga Bay is located just 12kms from the main west coast route State Highway 6, where the section of highway from Westport to Greymouth is known as 'The Great Coast Road' - considered to be one of the most scenic coastal highways on the planet!
Set on a peninsula at the end of the road on the edge of the horseshoe bay, our unique beachfront location is a stone's throw from the Tasman Sea (20 metres slightly elevated).
To the northwest, we overlook Tauranga Bay’s popular surf break and a cluster of islands known as ‘Wall Island’. Immediately below us on the seashore, huge boulders and rocks provide natural rock pools for fossicking or bathing in low tides. The fine sandy beach gently curves around into the bay, eventually leading to the Seal Colony carpark at the opposite side, the starting point of the short walk to the Seal Colony viewing platform. If you're keen to explore more of this impressive coastline, Cape Foulwind Lighthouse walkway carries on from here and you can view the Steeples rock formations out at sea.
To the southwest behind us is 9 Mile Beach, another beautiful long sandy beach stretching for miles until interrupted by the Okari River and lagoon. 9 Mile (also known as Okari Beach) is popular for walking, fossicking on the rocky headlands and surfing. Follow the wild western coastline’s cliffs, rocky outcrops and dense native forest as far as the eye can see, as it reaches south towards the snowy peaks of Mount Cook, visible on a pristine clear day with a keen eye!
